BRELAN SUGAHARA (SEW ALOHA)

Brelan Sugahara, born and raised in Hanalei, is one of the most talented artists around. He hadn’t sewn a day in his life until a few years ago after he was passed down an old sewing machine, where he quickly learned how to master sewing and embroidery. Brelan started to create amazing one-off and custom pieces out of his garage in Costa Mesa, California and Sew Aloha was born. From patches, to hats, to one-of-a-kind art pieces, Brelan incorporates his Hawaii roots into all of this work. If you are lucky to own a unique Sew Aloha piece, you can appreciate and understand all of his heart and soul that goes into his every creation. Literally embroidered Aloha.

THE HAKMAN-PARRISH PINTAIL … SOMETIMES PEOPLE COME INTO OUR LIVES AND WE NEVER KNOW HOW OR WHY, BUT WE ARE PROFOUNDLY POSITIVELY AFFECTED. SUCH IS THE CASE WITH JEFF…THE ONLY REASON I GOT A CHANCE TO WORK WITH HIM WAS BECAUSE I COULD GLASS OK. I HAD NO IDEA OF THE CRASH COURSE IN PURSUING EXCELLENCE IN BOARD DESIGN I WAS ABOUT TO GET. THE LEARNING CURVE MEANT MANY 24 HOUR ALL NIGHTER BOARDS AND LISTENING TO JEFF DESCRIBE HOW A BOARD WORKED AND WHAT MIGHT BE POSSIBLE IMPROVEMENTS, THEN WATCHING HIM RIDE THEM TO THEIR LIMITS. ALWAYS SO ARTICULATE, KIND, AND GENEROUS AND AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, ALWAYS RIGHT ON ABOUT BOARD DESIGN.
– Tom Parrish
I FIRST MET TOM IN THE EARLY 70’S. HE WAS MAINLY A GLASSER BUT SHAPED A BIT AS WELL. WE STARTED MAKING BOARDS SPECIFICALLY FOR SUNSET BEACH. AFTER YEARS OF EXPERIENCE AT SUNSET, I WAS VERY SPECIFIC ON WHAT I WANTED AND TOM WAS A PERFECTIONIST. WE PUT SO MANY HOURS INTO PERFECTING AN 8 FT. BOARD SPECIFICALLY FOR THAT BREAK! SOMETIMES TOM WOULD FINISH A BOARD START-TO-FINISH IN 24 HOURS IF I NEEDED IT FOR A CONTEST OR SOMETHING. AS SOON AS HE WAS FINISHED, HE WOULD IMMEDIATELY START ON ANOTHER ONE. WE GOT IT DIALED IN TO THE POINT WHERE THE BEST AUSTRALIANS AND HAWAIIANS AT THE TIME WERE ALL RIDING HAKMAN/PARRISH DESIGNS. IT’S A PLEASURE AND AN HONOR TO BE WORKING WITH TOM AGAIN, 50 YEARS LATER PRODUCING THE EXACT SAME BOARDS!
